The Opportunity
The Senior Accounting Manager / Controller will manage the organization’s monthly accounting cycle for core operations. This includes management of day-to-day accounting operations, weekly disbursements, monthly bank reconciliations, and month-end closing processes. The Controller is both an individual contributor as well as a manager, responsible for coordinating all accounting operational functions to ensure on-time, accurate, and complete deliverables.  Always a champion of process improvement, this position will expand use of automation and ensure efficiency and effectiveness in all operations.

The role is a full timeremote position and can work from anywhere in the US with work hours aligning with Central or Eastern Standard Time.  As a remote, people-first culture, we care deeply about our team members’ connections to one another and as such, travel 2-3 times per year to company events will be required.  
 
Plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting operational functions, including:
  • Direct accounts payable function; review and approve weekly disbursements
  • Monitor Donor Advised Fund (DAF) grant disbursement process compliance, including confirming required approvals have been obtained and liquidity needs will be met
  • Review weekly cash liquidity forecasts, ensuring the organization has cash to fund current operations
  • Assist Director in coordinating the monthly and annual financial statement closing and consolidation process
  • Review bank and other reconciliations prepared by the Senior Accountant
  • Assist the Director during the annual financial statement audit by preparing various workpapers and schedules
  • Understand and work with the team to achieve department objectives and key results (OKRs) 
  • Ensure consistent implementation of corporate accounting principles and procedures in full compliance with US GAAP, OMB, and all regulatory bodies
  • Evaluate accounting processes and internal control systems, recommending improvements as needed to be included in the accounting policies and procedures manual
  • Supervise and mentor Senior Accountant and any accounting contractor(s)
Other ad hoc duties as required
 
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in accounting, with 3+ years at a similar level with an organizational operating budget in excess of $10 million
  • Advanced coursework in finance or accounting required; Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting preferred ; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Accounting experience with investments required, private/complex investment structures strongly preferred
  • Supervisory experience required
  • Experience in audit and tax, preferably in non-profit and/or investment organizations preferred
  • Experience with accounting and consolidations of related entities preferred
Qualifications
 Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
·       Strong Excel skills required and ability to interface with various technology systems
·       Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams required
·       Proficiency with cloud-based collaboration tools Box and Asana preferred
·       Strong verbal and communication skills required
·       Highly attuned skills, attention to detail and professional demeanor
·       Can-do spirit willing to do what’s right and needed to get the job done
·       Flexibility and willingness to work in a virtual team environment
·       Ability to work independently and prioritize competing demands
