Job Summary
Travel Required: up to 5%
Telework Eligible: SBI currently utilizes a hybrid model, with a minimum of two anchor days in office per week. This is subject to change at the discretion of the SBI Executive Director.
About the SBI:
The Minnesota State Board of Investment (SBI) develops and implements investment policies and strategies for the state’s retirement funds, trust funds, and cash accounts. The statutory mission of the SBI is “to ensure that state and pension asset subject to this legislation will be responsibly invested to maximize the total rate of return without incurring undue risk” (Minnesota Statute 11A.01).
As of June 30, 2023, the SBI was responsible for the management of assets totaling ~$134.7 Billion.
About the Opportunity:
The Investment Analyst will play a key role in the SBI’s corporate governance-related activities. The primary purpose of this position will be to support the proxy voting process, including research, analysis, execution, and reporting. In addition to proxy voting, a portion of the incumbent’s time may be allocated to other activities, including engaging with portfolio companies and evaluating external manager’s investment processes related to environmental, social, and corporate governance practices. Key topics of focus include investor rights, corporate disclosures, climate change, diversity, executive compensation, international relations, worker rights, and more. The incumbent will be trusted to generate high-quality reports and PowerPoint presentations to communicate SBI initiatives to internal and external audiences. The incumbent will collaborate with SBI staff across the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
Investment Analyst Junior Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Strong attention to detail and emphasis on producing a high-quality work product.
- Demonstrated interest in business fundamentals, capital markets and investment strategies.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form with a wide variety of professionals and various levels of an organization.
- Willing participation in and desire to make continuous progress toward completion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program.
- A desire to learn and a proactive attitude.
Investment Analyst Intermediate Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 2+ years professional experience in a financial, investment or legal position
- Demonstrated interest in business fundamentals, capital markets and investment strategies.
- Knowledge of corporate law, corporate governance and fiduciary duty.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability prioritize duties, and support junior team members.
- Strong attention to detail and emphasis on producing a high-quality work product.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form with a wide variety of professionals and various levels of an organization.
- Willing participation in and desire to make continuous progress toward completion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program.
- A desire to learn and a proactive attitude.
Investment Analyst Intermediate Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in legal, business or other field.
- Experience working with an asset allocator such as a public or corporate plan sponsor, endowment, or foundation.
- Knowledge of research techniques and procedures sufficient to conduct studies related to department programs independently and effectively.
- Experience with data gathering, validation and retention.
- Familiarity with investment related analytical tools and software or the ability to learn platforms such as Glass Lewis Viewpoint, Factset, and Bloomberg.
- Proficient in utilizing data and information management systems and processes using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Experience using ChatGPT or other AI-enabled tools in a professional environment.
