Description

May River Capital seeking an Associate to join its expanding investment team

Who We Are:

Similar to the businesses and management teams we partner with, May River understands that people are what make its investment strategies successful.  The May River team is comprised of eleven Chicago-based professionals that all share in creating a culture of intellectual curiosity, resourcefulness, hard work, and a genuine passion for what we do.  Unlike many lower middle market private equity firms which take a more generalist approach, we focus solely on industrial growth businesses (advanced manufacturing, industrial technology, engineered products, industrial services & distribution companies), allowing us to be laser focused in our investment philosophy and capital deployment strategy.

What We Do:

May River Capital is a Chicago-based private equity firm which seeks to invest in high quality, lower middle market industrial businesses with excellent management teams and the potential for significant growth and value enhancement.  May River was founded in 2012 by three partners who have over 50 years of combined experience in principal investing, including structuring and leading platform investments, as well as assisting management with strategic growth initiatives post-acquisition.  Since 2012, May River Capital has raised approximately $500M in committed capital and has invested in 10 platform companies, as well as completed 14 add-on acquisitions.

What We’re Looking For:

May River is seeking an intellectually curious and resourceful Associate to join its expanding investment team.  The ideal candidate will have 1 to 3 years of professional experience in the field(s) of investment banking, transaction services, principal investing, and/or management consulting.  In addition, candidates will have strong undergraduate academic credentials as well as a genuine interest in investing in and working with high growth industrial businesses.  The Associate will be expected to assist in a variety of functional areas and will have a range of responsibilities, including:

  • New Investments: The Associate will be expected to assist in evaluating new platform and add-on investment opportunities.  The Associate will assist in all phases of the transaction underwriting process, including:
    • Conducting detailed industry and target company research
    • Preparing all relevant Investment Committee materials in advance of funding a transaction (e.g. investment memos, financial models, underwriting returns analyses, 100 day strategic plans)
    • Maintaining active dialogues with potential acquisition targets and their representatives
    • Managing third party service consultants and lending partners
    • Supporting negotiations, purchase agreement / credit agreement drafting, editing and review
  • Existing Investments: The Associate will also actively participate in key portfolio company initiatives, including board meetings, budgetary planning, financial reporting and analysis, team building, M&A, and other various strategic development activities
  • Firm Development: Given that May River plans to maintain a lean team, the Associate will also periodically lead or co-lead workstreams that relate to various firm development initiatives (e.g. new software and systems implementation, reporting and business intelligence, database management, etc.)

Qualifications:

May River is seeking candidates with 1 to 3 years of professional experience in the field(s) of investment banking, transaction services, principal investing, and/or management consulting.  In addition, candidates will have strong undergraduate academic credentials as well as a genuine interest in industrials investing.  Candidates should be Chicago-based or willing to relocate.  While we place tremendous importance on building diverse teams, we do expect candidates to possess many of the qualifications and values that we look for in our people, including:

  • A high degree of intellectual curiosity
  • Resourcefulness and an ability to work independently as well as in small teams
  • Highly analytical
  • Extensive financial modeling skills and demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong work ethic, detail oriented, and a genuine pride in one’s work
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills and business acumen
  • Highly motivated
  • Honesty and integrity
