The Director of Finance will lead the finance and accounting functions of the firm to ensure quality and completeness in all responsibilities while managing the department through an important period of growth and development. As a team leader and direct contributor, the Director will oversee all accounting operations, investment accounting, and corporate treasury. The Director is responsible for leading the annual audit and required tax filings to ensure on-time, complete delivery of all requirements. Always a champion of process improvement, the Director will provide subject-matter leadership for the 2022-2023 project to convert accounting systems, expand use of automation, and ensure efficiency and effectiveness in all operations.

The position requires both strategic and operational skills and senior-level experience that should include private investments, annual audits and tax filing (preferably for nonprofits), payroll tax compliance, management reporting. To be successful, the Director must be analytical and process driven, with a demonstrated ability to coach high-performing teams and project manage for on-time, quality results. The ideal candidate a service heart, a meticulous eye for detail, and a comfort with change. The Director of Finance role is a full time, remote position and can work from anywhere in the US. As a remote, people-first culture, we care deeply about our team members’ connections to one another and as such, travel 2-3 times per year to company events will be required.  The position reports to the COO and has supervisory responsibilities for the Controller and Accounting team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Operations
    • Serve as lead for departmental strategy and staffing as well as managing, mentoring, and developing the Controller and accounting team
    • Manage and contribute to our accounting daily activities and finance operations including revenue and expense management
    • Lead our monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close and consolidation process and all associated activities
    • Ensure consistent implementation of corporate accounting principles and procedures in full compliance with US GAAP, OMB, and all regulatory bodies
    • Champion highest quality corporate governance, and maintain and enhance the internal control environment in a compliant manner
    • Act as primary liaison to the external auditors and other external service providers in on-time, complete delivery of all requirements
    • Manage the Payroll and 401K processes, ensuring compliance with all reporting and filing requirements
  • Investment Administration
    • Execute Investment Paperwork
    • Trade security contributions
    • Weekly Portfolio Trading
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Drive improvements in reporting systems to increase efficiencies, enhance processes, automate activities, and reduce reporting timelines
    • Lead the selection, migration, and integration of a new accounting system
  • Compliance (potential, depending on skills)
    • Charitable Solicitation Registration in coordination with outside vendor
    • Grant and Investment Compliance Questions
    • Fiscal Sponsorship Compliance Oversight
    • Contract Execution
    • Business Insurance Renewal, updates and reporting


You are passionate about playing an integral role in evolving the impact investing space and possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting required; advanced degree a plus
  • CPA (active or inactive) required
  • A minimum of 10 years’ accounting experience, 15+ strongly preferred
  • Direct accounting experience with private/complex investment structures required
  • Experience in audit and tax, preferably non-profit
  • Experience leading the finance function of an organization and managing a team
  • Experience selecting and implementing new financial and accounting software
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly build rapport with other teams, customers, and prospective and existing investees.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Well versed in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, Office 365, Asana, and Box experience preferred
  • Flexibility and experience working in a virtual team environment
