Job Summary

The recently announced Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University will be a new University-wide center that will be the home of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, generate research and knowledge that advances effective city leadership and governance around the world, encourage and support Harvard students in becoming part of a new generation of municipal public servants, and offer leadership development and training to equip mayors and senior city officials with the skills, tools, and techniques to tackle the leadership and management challenges they face in their cities.

Reporting to the Executive Director, and working closely with the Director, the Senior Director for Communications will play a key role on the Center's leadership team, and lead a small team in developing, managing, and executing a plan that strengthens the Center's objectives to:

  • Reach scholarly and practitioner audiences with tools that strengthen and equip city leaders to lead high-performing and innovative cities
  • Advance the field of city leadership and city governance around the world
  • Convey the impact of the Center's work on city leaders, the field of city of leadership, and students

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Communications Stewardship. Design and implement an overall communications strategy and plan for the Center. Lead the development, management, and execution of the Center's content dissemination, website, digital platforms, multimedia, marketing, branding, and outreach to media.
  • Dissemination and Publication. Increase knowledge and use of a library of previously developed content including researchteaching cases, and other learning materials that aim to elevate the art and science of city leadership. Lead activities to disseminate new materials developed through the Center and Center-affiliated faculty. Work with the Center's operations team to maintain a database of contacts that receive key communications and announcements.
  • Manage Key Relationships. Work with partners throughout Harvard to ensure that the initiative's communication strategy advances the overall objectives of the institution. Maintain a network of partners that can be influential in disseminating our content and amplifying our communications. Work with donor's communications team on key opportunities.
  • Materials Development. Edit, write and/or oversee development of all collateral communications materials, including web copy, reports, press releases, fact sheets, overviews, annual reports, and presentations. Provide quality control, ensure precision and high-quality production of all communications materials.
  • Protocols. Establish communications protocols for the Center.
  • Team Leadership. Effectively manage and develop a team of 1-2 colleagues, promoting an inclusive and welcoming organizational culture, grounded in learning, problem-solving, and teamwork. Vet, manage contracts for, and oversee the use of any outside vendors or freelancers.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 10 years of experience (inclusive of graduate education) and progressively responsible strategic communications experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

    • Strong understanding of communications, dissemination, and publication, particularly in an academic or think tank environment
    • The ability to identify opportunities and make use of assets across Harvard and build networks to effectively reach both practitioner and scholar audiences
    • Success in managing a comprehensive strategic communications program of high volume and quality of output to advance an organization's objectives
    • Skill in effectively building social media, new media, and content marketing campaigns, as well as use of the various tools of digital technology and communications
    • Strong editing and writing skills that yield clear and accurate web copy, press releases, and info encompassing academic programs, research, and program impact
    • Effective manager with ability to design and improve business processes, manage complex projects, and work with internal and external stakeholders
    • Skill in building and managing relationships and networks with a diverse group of stakeholders
    • Effectiveness in a translating strategy into action plans and output
    • Entrepreneurial with an enthusiasm for doing whatever it takes to get the job done
    • Collaborative team member with an ability to build productive relationships, nurture an inclusive environment, problem-solve with colleagues, and lead work across all levels of a diverse organization
